The “no” side won with over 55% of the vote. Pinochet eventually stepped down from office in March of 1990, putting an end to the military dictatorship that had ruled the country since the violent 1973 coup d’état that deposed president Salvador Allende.

Is it that time again already ? Well gather around children and I will tell you a story. Are you sitting comfortably ? Good, then I shall begin.

Once upon a time there was a country where, every four years, a bizarre pantomime was enacted for the people in a gaudy, neon-lit theater. On stage, a right-hand sock-puppet would declaim loudly “vote for them and they will take your money and squander it wastefully to help the poor” and then a left-hand sock-puppet would pop up and reply equally loudly “vote for them and they will take your money and squander it wastefully to help the rich”.

By ritual the audience would divide into two groups, each cheering the statements of one or other of the sock-puppets. At the conclusion of the spectacle one of the sock-puppets would be chosen as a winner by popular acclaim. Then the audience would quietly leave the theater and go back to their everyday lives where absolutely nothing would change and everything would be as it always had been before while, behind the scenes, those who controlled the sock-puppets counted their profits and got on with business.

Of course this is just a fairy-story. In reality people would never be taken in by such a silly pantomime, would they ?

Yemenis have blocked main roads in the central city of Radaa to protest against US assassination drone attacks in their country.

At least 13 Yemeni civilians, including two women, were killed after missiles fired from a US drone hit two vehicles in Radaa in al- Bayda Province on Sunday. Three people were also injured in the attack.

According to Yemeni sources, the US drone mistakenly targeted the two vehicles.

“The US drone strike missed its suspected al-Qaeda target and mistakenly hit two vehicles in the Yemeni city of Radaa in al- Bayda province, killing up to 13 civilians, including two women,” a Yemeni police official told Xinhua by phone.

On October 1st, 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court will reconsider Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum (Shell Oil), a case which will determine whether corporations complicit in human rights abuses overseas can be sued in U.S. courts. Shell, through their work alongside the brutal military regime in Nigeria, is accused of complicity in the execution of nine peaceful protesters and the torture of many others in the Ogoni region of Niger Delta.

The case hinges on a law called the Alien Tort Statute (ATS), which allows foreign citizens to bring lawsuits in U.S. courts for violations of international law. Shell says the ATS doesn’t apply to them, simply because they are a corporation. Only two years after the Supreme Court used corporate personhood to grant corporations unprecedented influence over U.S. elections, Shell is asking the same nine judges to give corporations immunity from human rights litigation under the ATS.

But it gets worse. In March, after the first Kiobel hearing, the Supreme Court decided to rehear the case and ask whether the ATS applies outside the U.S. at all. Now the court could strike down all international ATS cases, wiping out human rights cases against individuals, too! The United States aspires to be a world leader on human rights and the rule of law, and we cannot allow corporations to dodge responsibility for their complicity in human rights abuses, or to tear down the laws that offer justice to survivors of human rights abuses and the families of human rights victims.

The Gaza Strip will not be “a liveable place” by 2020 unless action is taken to improve basic services in the territory, according to a UN report.

Basic infrastructure in water, health, education and sanitation “is struggling to keep pace with a growing population”, according to the report.

It estimates Gaza’s population will rise from 1.6m to 2.1m by 2020.

Israel tightened a blockade on Gaza after the Islamist movement Hamas came to power in the territory in 2007.

Israel says the blockade, which is policed with Egyptian co-operation and has never been fully lifted, is necessary to prevent weapons reaching Hamas.

The UN report estimates Gaza will need double the number of schools and 800 more hospital beds by 2020, and says the territory is already suffering from a housing shortage.

The report also says the coastal aquifer, the territory’s only natural source of fresh water, may become unusable by 2016.

Disconnected territory

UN officials point to the difficulty of improving the situation given “the closure of the Gaza Strip, violent conflict, and the pressing need for Palestinian reconciliation”.

“An urban area cannot survive without being connected,” said Maxwell Gaylard, the UN’s humanitarian chief in Gaza.

Gaza has no air or sea ports, and the economy is heavily dependent on outside funding and smuggling through tunnels under the Egyptian border.

Even though Gaza has experienced some economic growth in recent years, the report says it “does not seem to be sustainable” and finds that Gazans are worse off now than in the 1990s.

Unemployment was at 29% in 2011 and has risen since then, particularly affecting women and young people.

Traffic through the cross-border tunnels was hit in recent weeks by violence between Egyptian security forces and militants in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula, which borders Israel and Gaza.

Army Issues Anti-Suicide Nasal Spray As Military Suicides Double

The military suicide rate doubled in July. That’s one of our troops, almost every day.

To come up with an answer, the Army recently gave 3 million dollars to a university of Indiana research center, and those researchers came back with this: Anti-Suicide Nasal Spray.

Katie Drummond of The Daily reports researchers found a naturally occuring neurochemical called thyrotropin-releasing hormone, or TRH, that has euphoric, calming, anti-depressant effects. News of the nasal spray comes as a relief to some, who had to endure spinal taps for injections of the medicine.

The Pentagon, which tracks military suicides, reported that troops have committed the act at an 18 percent increase over the same period last year. Now, more troops die by their own hands that by the hands of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The spray is only possible because of advances in “nanotechnology delivery systems.” Researchers plan to run a full battery of trials over the next few years, and hopefully put the spray not only in the hands of soldiers, but civilians as well.
